In the early 1960s, chemical engineer Norman Stingley accidentally created a plastic that he couldn't stop from bouncing. Wham-O purchased the product, renaming it the SuperBall, and the world's best-selling bouncy ball was born. Made from the compound polymer zectron, which gives it that supreme elasticity, more than 20 million SuperBalls were sold in the 1960s. At the craze's height, Wham-O was producing 170,000 balls per day. They were so popular that McGeorge Bundy, National Security Adviser to then President Lyndon Johnson, bought them for his staff as stress relievers.
Surgeon Salary: How Much Doctors Make
2024-08-15
Doctors are still high earners, although few consider themselves “rich,” finds a recent survey by Medscape, a physician-focused information service from WebMD.
Using a third-party online collection website, Medscape surveyed 24,216 physicians across 25 specialties from Feb. 1 to 17, 2012. Doctors’ earnings ranged from about $156,000 a year for pediatricians to about $315,000 for radiologists and orthopedic surgeons. The highest earners — orthopedic surgeons and radiologists — were the same as last year, followed by cardiologists who earned $314,000 and anesthesiologists who made $309,000.

All sports have their own vocabularies, the shorthand lingo to communicate intricacies of rules and how play proceeds. But usually the scoring can at least be counted on to be fairly straightforward. Not so much for tennis.
For the unfamiliar, tennis starts with both players at zero, called love: “Love-all.
The Purpose-Driven Summer Camp | TIME
2024-08-15
The competition of a three-legged race could be brutal–and having your bunk short-sheeted humiliating–but most adults remember sleepaway camp as a relatively carefree experience, a respite from school and siblings and a departure from the pressures of normal life. Kids who went to private overnight camps spent weeks in bucolic settings, discovering activities they enjoyed and gamely participating in those they didn’t. There were bug bites and bad food, but the day’s biggest challenge often centered on rowing a canoe to the other side of the lake or roasting a marshmallow without burning it.
This story was originally published in September when Hit Man premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. It’s now being updated as the movie hits Netflix on June 7.
Hit Man, the latest movie from Richard Linklater, is many things: a funny rom-com with an edge, a star-making moment for actor Glen Powell, and a self-billed "somewhat" adaptation of a true story.
Linklater and Powell, who co-wrote the movie, have taken the actual life of Gary Johnson, a professor who moonlighted as a fake hit man for law enforcement, and Hollywoodized it.

What Nutrition Facts Labels Leave Out
2024-08-15
The tech industry has a new trend: adopting “transparency labels” modeled after the iconic Nutrition Facts panel found on food packaging. In 2020, Apple introduced “Privacy Labels” aimed at disclosing how apps handle user data. And that was just the beginning. Starting on April 10, the FCC is requiring internet service providers to feature “Broadband Facts” labels detailing pricing, speeds, and data caps. Meanwhile, some policymakers and industry analysts have called for an “AI Nutrition Facts” label to clarify how artificial intelligence systems create content.
