Hip-hop is having a party. For the uninitiated, 2023 marks a year-long 50th birthday celebration for the genre. Celebrations and commemorations abound just about everywhere—even at unlikely places, like the Vice President’s mansion.
This year affords us a unique opportunity to look back on a half-century of development, and to pause and consider the impact of the Black Caribbean artists who democratized broadcast, blended old genres to forge new ones, and, ultimately, helped to lay the foundation for the global phenomenon we know as hip-hop culture.
Many things have changed since Jahurul Mohammed first came to Qatar eight years ago. For one, the colossal Al Bayt Stadium, which hosted the2022 World Cup opening ceremony, didn’t exist, and the only thing other than sand dunes in its vicinity 30 miles north of Doha was a famous wedding hall. “None of this was here,” says Mohammed, a taxi driver from Bangladesh, sweeping his hand across the dazzling cityscape of concrete and neon beyond his windshield.

As many people confront hard truths that black Americans have faced daily in this country, the need for education about the history of the long and ongoing fight for racial justice is critical.
The command’s Spokesman, ASP Musa Mohammed said on Wednesday in Yenagoa that some youths killed the student over his alleged refusal to pay ₦500 levy to climb a sand dump in Amassoma.
