“I think it’s a generational thing.” I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard that phrase throughout my career (and sometimes used it myself) to explain away confusion, miscommunication, contrasting points of view, or different styles of working. It’s been happening a lot more lately, though, and with good reason: For the first time in history, five generations are colliding in the workplace. They are: Generation Z: born between 2001 and 2020 Millennials: born between 1981 and 2000 Generation X: born between 1965 and 1980 Baby Boomers: born between 1946 and 1964 Silent Generation: born between 1925 and 1945 Their office interactions are often framed as negative—Boomers as resistant to change, or Gen Z glued to their phones—but experts say they don’t have to be.
In early April 2022, about two dozen children and their families gathered beneath the redwoods in a regional park near Oakland, Calif. They sat with a physician, Dr. Nooshin Razani, beneath the branches of the ancient giants, breathing the fresh air and discussing the phenomenon of fairy rings—when a mama tree is cut down, the baby trees grow up in a circle surrounding the stump of the parent tree. These families are taking part in a program Razani runs at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

He said, “I'm of the opinion that stereotyping is not really a bad thing, especially in the movie scene, because it only means that you're really good at something, and everyone can tell, and it's okay to be good at one thing. But there's so much an actor has that you don’t want to be kept in a box.
“A boy at the beginning of a story has no way of knowing that the story has begun.” So writes Erin Morgenstern early on in her latest fantasy epic, The Starless Sea, when her protagonist decides not to open a very special door. The door, with a golden knob and intricately painted carvings, has mysteriously materialized on a wall in the New Orleans alley that Zachary Ezra Rawlins always cuts through on his walk home from school.
Often, spy thrillers evoke familiar comforts, if also images of dusty covers and yellowed pages. But Lauren Wilkinson, while returning to a classic era (the Cold War), manages to reinvigorate the genre by following a character we haven’t seen before: a black woman serving as an FBI agent tasked with helping to remove the Communist president of Burkina Faso (who was known in real life as “Africa’s Che Guevara”). All the while, Wilkinson uncovers several secrets involving politics, race and sex as her protagonist attempts to survive in a world controlled by white men.
