Lying on a beach in Menton, France, in the days leading up to the July 14 attack in nearby Nice, my biggest worry about the attire of my fellow women beachgoers was that it appeared that thong bikinis were now de rigueur. The mayors of several coastal towns in France apparently disagree. Citing concerns ranging from hygiene to security, more than 20 towns have moved to ban Muslim women from wearing the full-body swimsuits known as burkinis on public beaches.
Mr. Paul Dekete, the North Central Coordinator of the CONECDA Youth Wing, made the request in a statement on Sunday in Jos. Dekete, who faulted the manner in which the affected workers; largely directors, deputy and assistant directors, were dismissed, said that the process violated the bank’s established procedure. The coordinator also maintained that the move would grossly affect the operations of critical departments within the apex bank, adding that 16 departments were affected by the action.
Article 77 of Guatemala’s new constitution (TIME, Jan. 16) guarantees civil rights “except in the case of activities against the security of the state, perturbation of the peace, public calamity or invasion.” Under such troubled conditions, states the article, a special “Law of Public Order” can be invoked, to replace the constitution during the emergency. Last week the slow-moving Constituent Assembly put the finishing touches on the new public-order law—though only over a storm of objections from opposition Assemblymen and the independent press.

There’s no denying that Harry Potter is one of the most magical series ever written, but even J.K. Rowling herself has admitted that the story has a few plot holes. But while some of these mysteries — such as that of the entire Time-Turner storyline — will likely remain unsolved, a number of the more frustrating inconsistencies have been explained away in the years since the books were published. From the presence of Peter Pettigrew to the conspicuously invisible Thestrals, here are five major Harry Potter plot holes with resolutions.
I first saw the cave wall in the Crypt of the Original Sin in my family province of Matera, in Southern Italy, in the Fall of 2014. The faces of the angels and Adam and Eve, painted in the 9th century by Byzantine monks, looked strangely familiar. They resembled my family. And then there was the subject matter: Stealing food. I had grown up in Jersey City, N.J., where swiping food was a birthright.
SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED ALL OF HOUSE OF CARDS SEASON TWO. House of Cards set the bar high in terms of shock-factor with Russo’s murder last season. Some viewers might have questioned whether they could top that drama in the second season — but the end of episode one assured us that Cards hadn’t lost its punch. Here are the nine most shocking moments from season two, ranked.
Pulling Ford’s new all-electric Mustang Mach-E out of a Brooklyn garage late this winter, I felt a little duped. It seemed more like I was driving a giant motorized iPad than the electrified successor to an iconic American muscle car. Just a few weeks earlier, the company’s sound designers told me about the lengths to which they had gone to design and digitally produce the perfect engine noise, experimenting with recordings of electric guitars, Formula E race-car engine sounds and the hum of high-voltage power lines.

Today, if you were given the most popular boy’s name, you’d be named Liam.
